Brainspotting
What Is It?
Brainspotting operates under the assumption that the eyes are the window to the soul... or to the subconscious at any rate. It assumes that where we look in our field of vision is not due to chance and that our subconscious looks where it chooses to look for a reason. Using this information a client finds the most distressing spot in their field of vision when thinking about something distressing and holds their gaze there until the distress disappears. This technique allows for the subconscious release of emotions until all distress is gone.

How Does It Work?
The most genuine answer to this question is that I don't know. Somehow our eye position allows for accessing the subconscious in a way that is pretty unique. This process can be used in several different ways which I summarize here. Basically you can either fix your gaze on the most distressing area in your field of vision or the least distressing and either one allows for healing. You can also alternate between eyes, closing one while keeping the other open, as one eye may experience more distress or relief which can then be utilized to heal as mentioned above.
Clients can experience all kinds of different impacts from this treatment method including flashbacks of memories, spontaneous intense emotions, or other impacts. As this method directly accesses the subconscious, experiences and reactions can vary considerably.

What Does A Session Look Like?
In a session we will decide on a distressing topic to focus on and then use brainspotting by systematically finding the area in your field of vision that creates the most distress or relief and then fixing your eyes there until the distress is gone or the relief becomes complete. Clients may talk (or not talk) during this process as desired. Once the distress is gone, we will move on to the next healing target.

What Results Have People Had?
People have had very positive impacts with brainspotting with the resolution of previously distressing emotions as the most prominent result. Brainspotting, like every other method of healing, does not work for everyone so it hasn't worked for some people, including myself.
